DIY group gets it done for Homer Glen couple

What is it like to be newlyweds, living without a lot of furniture in your recently purchased home, and then receiving a beautiful bedroom makeover in one day, courtesy of the folks from The DIY Playbook and Lowe’s? Just ask April and Mike Klichowski of Homer Glen.

The couple was married in December 2015 after postponing their wedding because of the tragic death of April’s brother and a short time later, the death of Mike’s father. They purchased their home in Homer Glen shortly after they were married in order to be close to their families. They have endured so much tragedy in their young lives, yet their positive attitude won over the editors of The DIY Playbook — Casey Finn and Bridget Matkovich — when they (April and Mike) entered the Lowe’s Home Improvement DIY makeover project. They were ultimately picked as the most deserving recipients.

The search began in August, 2016, when Casey and Bridget, editors of The DIY Playbook (a home improvement and do-it-yourself blog), teamed up with Lowe’s to offer to make over a room, all in one day, in a deserving family’s home. Dozens of applications were received by Casey and Bridget; who had to narrow it down to one recipient, which was a difficult task.

“Ultimately, we wanted to choose homeowners who deserved and were in need of a bit of joy in their lives. We also wanted a space that had potential. After reading April and Mike’s submission, we knew that they were our perfect match,” explain The DIY Playbook bloggers.

They met Mike and April early in September and spent four weeks designing and planning the space. On Oct. 1, thirty volunteers spent around twelve hours renovating the Homer Glen residents’ bedroom. The results are amazing. Here is the link to the actual room reveal: http://thediyplaybook.com/2016/10/neutral-bedroom-reveal-lowes-fall-makeover.html

The DIY Playbook is an online blog and resource for decorating, design and do-it-yourself projects. Casey and Bridget began their blog over three and a half years ago, combining their love of decorating and DIY projects with the unwavering friendship they have shared since high school. Bridget is a high school teacher at Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park, and Casey is a freelance television producer, yet their love of decorating and DIY projects keeps them busy in their free time. On the blog, the duo demonstrate how to tackle DIY projects and make over spaces in their own homes, and their site has received millions of page views since it started in 2013.

This particular project was a team effort between The DIY Playbook and Lowe’s Home Improvement. The Orland Park Lowe’s, 15601 . LaGrange Road, supplied all of the materials for the makeover, including the furniture, paint, accessories and six of their very best employees. The ladies of The DIY Playbook provided the vision and the design ideas; along with the choices for materials and a wealth of friends and family to help with labor on the day of the transformation. All of the DIY projects in the room are budget-friendly, including the refreshed closet doors.

“We used the existing wood bi-fold doors and refreshed them with inexpensive lattice, fresh white paint, and sleek hardware. They now look much more high-end and contemporary,” Bridget and Casey explained.

Mike and April couldn’t be happier with their new bedroom space. Their once dark and barren bedroom is now a bright and calming oasis. A well-deserved and well-executed makeover, thanks to The DIY Playbook and Lowe’s Home Improvement. To see more photos and learn more about the DIY projects visit www.thediyplaybook.com.
