Upcoming events in Orland Park

The staff of the public library will be out and about in the community. From 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays throughout the summer, the staff will be making a “splash” at Centennial Pool, 15600 West Ave. “Dive” into cool stories and plenty of coloring pages under the pool pavilion. Children through fourth grade are welcome. Inclement weather may cancel the program.
At 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursdays, the staff will be “parking” at different parks throughout the village. Check the library website (www.orlandparklibrary.org) to see when they will be at a location near you.
From 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Fridays (excluding Aug. 2), the library’s outreach services staff will be at the village Farmers Market, which is held by the Civic Center on Ravinia Avenue. Entertaining stories will be presented for children through the fourth grade. Inclement weather may cancel the program.
Wacky Wednesday
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 17, the village will host “Wacky Wednesday” at the village center amphitheater, 147th Street and Ravinia Avenue. Dress in your wackiest outfit (crazy colors, mismatched socks/shoes or crazy hair styles) and come for a fun time and great entertainment provided by Super Stolie (Rebecca Stoelinga).
She entertains around Chicago with her high-energy, interactive shows that feature music for children. After the show, stay for ice cream treats and DJ entertainment. This event is free and open to all ages. For more information, visit www.orland-park.il.us or call (708) 403-6150.
Back-to-School Health Fair
Not that we want to think about “back to school” just yet, but the Orland Township Health Services Department is hosting its annual back-to-school health fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 13.
This free event will be on the grounds of the township office, 14807 Ravinia Ave. No appointment is necessary but participants must display proof of residency. A variety of back-to-school services will be offered to residents.
Dental screenings will be offered by Silver Lakes Family Dental free of charge. This examination will fulfill the state’s requirements for kindergarten, second and sixth grades. All Perfect Smiles will also be on hand with their mobile station for free dental cleanings.
School and sports physicals will be offered by Palos Medical Group. School physicals are required for kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades.
Immunizations will be offered by the Orland Township Health Services Department. All state-required vaccines are available. A shot record must be presented at the time of service.
To get an immunization, you must be an Orland Township resident, 18 or younger and uninsured or insured by Medicaid or All Kids (card must be presented at the time of immunization). Adult vaccines will also be available for a discounted fee.
Vision screenings will be offered by Dr. Ticho from The Eye Specialists Center free of charge. However, this screening does not fulfill the vision examination required by the state for kindergarten. That exam must be performed in an office.
Lead testing will be offered by Doctors General Laboratory for $19. Under Illinois law, a parent or guardian of any child between the ages of 6 months through 6 years must have the child tested for lead poisoning before he or she may be admitted to a day care center, home day care, preschool, nursery school, kindergarten or other licensed child care facility.
The back-to-school health fair will also offer face painting, games, food and drink, school supply offers, financial advice, children’s nutritional information and important safety tips from the Orland Park Police Department and the Orland Fire Protection District.
Walter Krop and Derrick Bovina from New York Life, 7840 Graphic Drive, Tinley Park, will be offering a children’s identification packet without charge. The packet includes multiple photos and fingerprints, which are given to the parent on a CD along with a paper printout similar to an ID card that you can have laminated. This ID card can be used in 48 states for Amber Alert.
