Tax Rebate for Orland Park

Originally published November 23, 2014 (Submission copy)

The Village of Orland Park Board of Trustees has again announced a rebate of a portion of eligible village residents’ 2013 property taxes that were paid to the village in 2014. Including this year’s upcoming rebate, the village will have rebated property taxes for 10 of the last 13 years. In total, the Village of Orland Park will have rebated approximately $34.5 million since 2003.

To qualify, you must own a single-family home, town home, residential condominium unit, and/or multi-unit apartment building. In order to receive your partial rebate, all application requirements must be met by the deadline date, Friday, December 12. Refund amounts will be determined after all applications have been received. The amount approved for distribution this year among qualified applicants is $2,200,000.

In an email discussing the program, Joseph LaMargo, Village of Orland Park Public Information Officer said, “The expected rebate amount per applicant for this year has not been determined because the board has to vote on how the rebates will be distributed.”

Eligible Village of Orland Park residents may apply for the village’s residential property tax rebate beginning November 3, 2014. The Village Board approved a rebate of $2.2 million as a result of the Village of Orland Park’s strong financial position. Including the upcoming rebate, the village will have rebated property taxes for 10 of the last 13 years.

Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin commented on the program that “we’ve already had a number of people apply online and come into the Village Hall to file their rebate applications. We encourage everyone who’s eligible to get their paperwork in before the December 12 deadline”.

“We are very pleased that the Village of Orland Park is in a strong financial position and is able to again offer the tax rebate for eligible village residents,” said Trustee Carole Griffin Ruzich, chair of the village’s Finance Committee.

Orland Park residents have three methods in which to apply for the rebate. By now, you likely will have received a post card detailing your options. The first option – apply online beginning November 3 at www.optaxrebate.com. The second option – download a paper application and bring the completed application in to Village Hall. Or, lastly, pick up an application at the following places: The Frederick T. Owens Village Hall, 14700 South Ravinia Avenue; the Recreation Administration Building, 14600 South Ravinia Avenue; the Village’s Sportsplex, 11351 West 159th Street; and the Orland Park Public Library, 14800 South Ravinia Avenue.

Online instructions on the village’s website at www.orlandpark.org will guide you through the process. Also, an instructional video of the online application process is available on the village’s cable television stations – Orland Park Comcast Channel 4, and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99.

To get started, you will need your 2013 Second Installment Tax form – which, if you need to obtain a copy contact the Cook County Treasurer’s Office at www.cookcountytreasurer.com.

Next, you should have a copy of the front and back of your current driver’s license. Lastly, you will need a current Village of Orland Park Water Bill.

For online submissions, you will fill in your Property Tax PIN, then the Account Number from your Water Bill. You may then need to fill in some contact information. Next, scan the Tax Bill and your driver’s license. Hint – I copied the back of my license, then put that copy on the scanner with my driver’s license face down, and made one scan. You will then be asked to upload the scanned items. A few more “Yes or No” questions, then choose your options for receiving your refund, initial, and submit. Pretty easy!

If you do not have access to a printer or scanner you may bring your documents to Village Hall, where the staff at the village’s cashier’s office will scan your documents, free of charge. Staff is available to answer questions and accept applications during regular business hours Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with later hours, until 7:00 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of the month.

There are a number of options available for receiving your refund this year. Along with having a check sent, you may also elect to have the amount credited to your water bill account; as a donation to the Open Lands; or directly deposited into your checking or savings account. Direct deposit is new this year, and, along with convenience, offers quicker receipt of your rebate. If you pay your Village of Orland Park Water bill automatically online, that banking account information may be used for direct deposit – making the processes extremely easy!
